Vintage Mid-Century Expressionist Framed Oil Painting - Sail Boats & Flowers

About the Item

SAIL BOATS & FLOWERS Size: 43 x 48 cm (including frame) Oil on Board A fantastic and confidently executed expressionist mid-century composition, painted in oil onto board. A large brown vase filled with striking orange and yellow flowers punctuates the foreground of the painting, and with a view of a vast sea with sailing boats behind it. Tucked away on the left-hand side of the composition stands a small orange hut. Its striking hue contrasts beautifully against the darker blue ocean. Executed in an expressive manner, the artist demonstrates strong emotion in the piece through the use of rich colours that infuses the scene with energy, as well as bold and confident brushstrokes that create a textural visual impact. This oil on board is housed in a deep-profiled wood frame with an inner gilt and cream window. Both painting and frame are in excellent vintage condition.     Bold and angular composition with cannas by Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014). Bright red flowers jump out from a saturated green background. Large leaves act as a background, covering the majority of the composition, intertwined with other foliage. This piece is executed on top of a previous composition and the artist has left part of it visible around the edges to act as a border. Signed "Weist" in the lower left corner. Title and artist's info on verso. No frame. Board size: 20"H x 16"W Claire Weist (American, 1930-2014) was an artist known primarily for her watercolor compositions. She won several awards throughout her career, including the jury award for graphics from the Illinois Watercolor Society. Weist was originally from the Boston area and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art and then Harvard. After spending time teaching art and as an illustrator, Weist moved to Crete, Illinois and opened her own studio, where she spent the remainder of her professional career.
